Cantor Howard Stern has been with Temple Shalom since 2002. Born near Washington D.C., he was raised in New Orleans. He studied at the Midreshet Yerushalayim of the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem before receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory, with voice as primary instrument, from the Eastman School of Music (1986). He went on to receive a Masters Degree in Music Theory from the University of Michigan (1989), where he was the president of the Michigan Music Theory Society. He received a Ph.D. in Composition and Theory from Brandeis University (2001). Cantor Stern served as a Lecturer on Music at Harvard University (2004-07), where he taught several courses in music theory and received the Bok Award for distinction in teaching. In addition, he has taught at several Jewish schools in the area, including the Prozdor of Hebrew College. Before coming to Temple Shalom of Medford, Cantor Stern served for four years at Temple Shalom in Milton, MA.
